Mashhad Carpet History
The art of carpet weaving in Mashhad is about five hundred years old. One of the oldest carpets of Mashhad, which is available in Iran, is the carpet of prayer (Sajada), which was given to Suleiman the Magnificent by Shah Tahmasb in 1556. These carpets were built in three degrees of quality in the workshop of Sultan Ibrahim Mirza, Sam Mirza’s son and Shah Tahmasb’s nephew. One of its top-notch types was in London until two years ago and some believe it now belongs to the famous Qatari collector, Sheikh Saud al-Thani. A number of second and third degree samples are still available at Topkapi Museum. In the 19th and 20th centuries, Mashhad carpets became so popular that they were produced to export to other countries in addition to domestic use; the woolen fibers in these carpets were polished so much to absorb the color better but this also reduced the life of the carpets. This was a factor to make a bad image of Mashhad's carpet in the consumers’ minds and after a while the export of this carpet to Europe fell dramatically. Unfortunately, the remaining carpets which belonged to that period are all exposed to erosion.
